Tav Falco - 4 stars in Mojo!

Here’s the 4-star review from this months‘ MOJO: „Memphis punk-a-billy classic from 1980, co-directed by Alex Chilton.
Quite why Chilton, four years on from Big Star, immediately post-Cramps, got embroiled with Falco – a lisping Arkansan fantasist with delusions of Elvishood – isn’t clear. Maybe Tav’s performance art pipedreaming tickled Chilton, but when the two set about exhuming the buried passions of early rock`n´roll, sparks flew. Having fired their sticksman after abortive sessions at Sun (with Jim Dickison on piano), Panther Burns cut these one-takes at Ardent, with Chilton often covering on drums. She’s The One That Got It teeters ever collapse-wards, LX’s reverb-maxed solo staggering in and out of abstraction. Tav’s croon on Ary Barroso’s Brazil, meanwhile, is way off. A stray fife-and-drum corps only multiplies the chaos, but therein lies the thrill of this wayward masterpiece. Also included: 1981’s Blow Your Top EP, with future Bad Seed Jim Sclavunos commanding the beat.“ (Andrew Perry)
First two Pantherman testimonials!

Kris Needs reviews the Stag-O-Lee reissue of Behind The Magnolia Curtain, Tav Falco & Panther Burns groundbreaking debut record… a „sizzlingly shambolic rockabilly hellfire“ indeed. 4 glorious stars, too.

„Named after a dark plantation legend, the Unapproachable Panther Burns „art damage“ project was initially the 1979 brainchild of confrontational rock`n´roll performance artist Tav Falco and the late Alex Chilton, who enthusiastically handled drums along with guitar duties. After impressing Rough Trade’s Geoff Travis at a New York show, an album was recorded at Sam Phillips‘ Memphis studio, but rejected.
Acquiring future Gun Club guitarist Jim Duckworth, they tried again at Ardent Studios, recording everything in one take to emerge with the sizzlingly shambolic rockabilly hellfire of Beyond The Magnolia Curtain, successfully capturing their uproarious live assault on such primal missives as Bourgeois Blues (bolstered by the Tate County Mississippi Drum Corps).
When Panther Burns took to the road, Chilton departed, with New York post punk dynamo Jim Sclavunos (now a Bad Seed) joining on drums. By 1982, Falco was being embraced by Chris Stein’s downtown enclave, resulting in recording the tighter Blow Your Top EP at NY’s venerable Plaza studios, released on Blondie’s guitarist’s Animal imprint. Both records have been beautifully repackaged and annotated in this first instalment of eight reissues covering Falco’s rip-snorting back-catalogue, now standing as one of the era’s most timelessly unhinged joyrides, steered by a true original.“ (Kris Needs in Record Collector. ****)
Out now & looking great: The Excellos!

Stag-O-Lee proudly presents: The Excellos on 10". When I first heard the Excellos' debut CD many moons ago I was hooked rightaway. The opener - a Slim Harpo tune delivered John Lee Hooker-style - directly placed this band in my personal top-3. The London based 4-piece is currently working on new material, which sounds even hotter, but in the meantime they handpicked their 8 favourites from their debut (which never was released on vinyl) for release on the nicest, best and most adorable formats of them all - the shiny 10". Stag-O-Lee is proud as hell as this not only looks great, but it sounds massive as well.

We made 500 of them and they are flying out fast!!!

A Halloween present by The Fuzztones!

The Fuzztones have certainly achieved legendary status as cult faves during their 30 year career. Their fiery brand of Garage-Psych Punk pre-dated the entire “Garage Revival” of the 1980’s and has influenced hundreds of groups, from The Hives to The Horrors.

By 1991 the band was riding high. A decade into their career they released a bunch of great records on various labels, but also had a deal with Indie-giant Beggar’s Banquet. Monster A-Go-Go – the record in question - was released on Skyclad subsidiary Screamin’ Skull in 1991. Around this time of the year, I might add, because it is a very special kind of release - a collection of 60s-type Monster and Halloween songs.

Subtitled 14 Spook-Adelic Halloween Classics! the band tackled a few of their spooky favourites like The Witch (The Sonics), Jack The Ripper (Screamin‘ Lord Sutch), D.O.A. (Bloodrock), She’s My Witch (Kip Tyler) or Roky Erickson’s masterpiece Night Of The Vampire for your ghoulish pleasure. So get your share of evil garage vibes NOW!

Monster A-Go-Go was deleted for more than a decade and is now reissued on the mighty Stag-O-Lee label in a nice and dandy digipak.
Coming soon on Stag-O-Lee: The Obsidians

Out on October 28 on Stag-O-Lee:

The Obsidians – Black Veil/Shakin‘ It Up
7"-single

Get a taste of this! It's obscure late 50’s, early 60’s frat-style garage rock & roll with a big apprehension for rhythm & blues and soul. Featuring the final LOS RAW MEAT band line-up, the big voice of ELLA - of NIGHTSHOUTERS & ROOSTERS fame - plus the real Linus LaLonde means that this gang knows how to shake things up. So, clap your hands and squeal with glee! Baby, it's about to get wild. 500 copies only!
Must Have Reissue

…was The Sunday Times headline for the review of Tav Falco’s Behind the Magnolia Curtain reissue on Stag-O-Lee. Here’s the glorious review:

„Today’s rockabilly revivalists such as Imelda May and Kitty, Daisy & Lewis, revere their sources. In the late 1970’s, however, degenerate New Yorkers and track-marked Australians pointed their quiffs at the future and bled post-punk noise over the music’s bones. This collection of Tav Falco’s early recordings finds the fabled Memphis polymath howling off-key over perfectly out-of-sync broken blues from the Panther Burns band, which features Big Star’s Alex Chilton on uncharacteristically sloppy guitar and Jim Sclavunos on drums, later poached by an indebted Nick Cave.“
Internationally celebrated American singer/guitarist Tav Falco, leader of the renowned neo-psychedelic rock ‘n’ roll band Panther Burns, has penned a list of his ten favourite songs exclusively for the blog Louder Than War. It makes for fascinating reading, shedding much light upon the music that incessantly ignites Falco’s muse.
Stag-O-Lee in summer mode!

Well, don't think we are lazin' by the pool. First off all there is bad weather in the Stag hometown and secondly we are working hard to prepare our fall releases. There won't be many as we rather concentrate on each release.

I just spent a weekend in Switzerland, saw the amazing Moon Invaders in Brugg and visited the Hangar Rockin` festival in St. Stephan - a hot rod/US car meeting (including 1/8 mile race) with great live music by The Incredible Staggers, Dollar Bill, J.D. McPherson, Starliters, Voola & The Jayhaws and others. Great DJ-ing, too. Amazing scenery came for free.

For those who are interested (and can read German) there is a travel report at shake-baby-shake.blogspot.com

What a weekend!

The Orange Blossom Special #15 festival is over and the Stag-O-Lee Allstars are licking their wounds. The OBS party is thrown by Glitterhouse Records, the parent of baby Stag-O-Lee.

Stag-O-Lee recording artists Miraculous Mule rocked the main stage and destroyed the small stage in the back a day later. The Stag-O-Lee booth went over very well, with the Soundcruiser (our one deck disco machine - see picture) blasting various Soul/R&B/Rocksteady/Exotica-45`s during the breaks. From midnight on the Allstars hosted the afterparty at the legendary Stadtkrug in town - every day untill the sun came up. People danced like crazies - what a blast!

The Stag-O-Lee Allstars rockin the OBS!

The annual Orange Blosson Special festival is taking place this coming weekend for the 15th time. From Friday (10th) until Sunday (12th) a bunch of bands are playing the garden behind the Glitterhouse headquarter - Stag-O-Lee artists Miraculous Mule among them. Like last year Stag-O-Lee will have a booth in the back selling their fine releases (at special prices) and some other goodies like the Spoonful CDs. Our Soundcruiser (our mobile discoteque) will also be on site to spin some fine 50s R&B, Exotica and Jamaican 45s during the breaks.

When the bands are finished at midnight the Stag-O-Lee Allstars (7 out of 9) will head to the coolest bar in town - The Stadtkrug - to drop more wicked tunes. Hope lots of people will make it from the festival ground to the Stadtkrug shake their tailfeather.

Behind The Magnolia Curtain reissue scheduled for September!

It sure has been a long and winding road towards finalizing the reissue of the deluxe edition of the Behind The Magnolia Curtain debut album (plus the Blow Your Top 12“-EP) by Tav Falco & Panther Burns (featuring the late Alex Chilton). Almost a year in the making, but no too late to become a 30th Anniversary Edition, as the record was recorded in summer 1981 at Ardent Studios Memphis TN. It will come as 2-CD and 2-LP edition, remastered and well packaged. We’re shootin‘ for a September release (2011, of course), but don’t hold your breath.

A release party at the 100 Club in London is in the works and maybe we can convince Tav Falco & cohorts to do a special set and play the debut album in it’s entirety?!?

There’s more Stag-O-Lee stuff scheduled for the second half of 2011 – more quality than quantity – but more of that later…
He will also man the DJ booth for the remainder of the evening, spinning a vast array of hot wax (50's R&R and R&B, Garage, Psych and Exotica) from his impressive collection of vinyl rarities!
